A simple, repeatable approach you can use on test day to stay focused, avoid traps, and pick the best answer efficiently.
How to Answer Questions (Step-by-Step)
Read the question first: Before diving into the vignette, read the question to understand what you're looking for.
Glance at answer choices: Quickly review the answer options to focus your attention on the relevant information.
Review images and labs: If provided, glance at images and labs before reading the vignette to get a sense of the key details.
Read the vignette strategically: Focus on the information relevant to the question.
Use the process of elimination: Eliminate obviously incorrect answers and choose the best option from the remaining choices.
Watch for patterns in answer choices: If multiple answers seem similar or convey the same meaning, they might be less likely to be correct. For example, if a question asks which option is a malignancy and most answer choices describe well-differentiated tissues (resembling the original tissue), the correct answer might be the one that describes a poorly differentiated tissue (not resembling the original tissue).
